The Importance of Navigation
The Importance of Navigation within a VLE
One of the greatest appeals of Moodle is its ability to be structured to suit the needs, requirements and philosophies of each establishment that uses it. In doing so, it becomes possible to create a structure that best serves its user communities.
We like to refer to this structure as the Navigation Structure; one that contains a clear directional path for which different users may follow through the levels and layers of the VLE.
There are numerous ways of structuring a VLE and just some of these are listed here.
The terms Categories (and sub-Categories), Courses and Topics are inherent to the Moodle Structure. If Courses are thought of as sub-sets of Categories and working in a ‘folder’ (Courses) and ‘filling cabinet’ (Categories) concept, the Topics become the ‘paper’ which fill the ‘folder’. Sub-categories may be thought of as drawers within the Categories ‘Filing Cabinet’.
